9.2 Hunger
backWhat is Hunger? 🍽️
Hunger is when people don’t have enough food to eat. This can mean they skip meals, eat very little, or don’t get the right kinds of food that their body needs to stay healthy. When someone is hungry, their body and brain don’t work as well because they don’t have enough energy to do all the things they need to do—like learning, playing, or staying healthy. |
What is Undernourishment? 🍏
Undernourishment is different from hunger. It happens when people have food, but the food doesn’t have the right vitamins, minerals, or nutrients they need to stay healthy. Even though they may not be hungry, they could still feel weak, get sick a lot, or have trouble growing. |
How Do You Know if Someone is Hungry or Undernourished? 🤔
When someone is hungry, they might feel dizzy, tired, or have trouble concentrating in class. If someone is undernourished, they might look too thin for their height or shorter than other kids their age. If people don’t get enough food for too long, it can cause health problems like not being able to focus or even getting sick more easily.
How Do We Measure Hunger? 📊
We use something called the Global Hunger Index (GHI) to measure how much hunger there is in different countries. It looks at:
- How many people don’t have enough food to stay healthy.
- How many kids are too short for their age.
- How many kids are too thin for their height.
- How many kids die before age 5, often because they didn’t get enough good food.
The higher the score, the worse the hunger problem is.
Check out the GHI of some countries since 2000.
The diagram shows the percentage of people in countries who go hungry by years from 2000. Let's see the Phlippines. In 2000 25% of all people didn't have enough food. The numebr went down to 19% by 2005. Currently the number is 15%, which is a good improvement. It shows that there are fewer people who don't have enough to eat.
What Does the World Food Programme Do? 🌍
The World Food Programme (WFP) is an organization that helps end hunger around the world. They give food to people in need, like after a big storm or in places where there’s fighting. They also help communities learn how to grow their own food and make sure kids get at least one good meal a day at school.
By making sure people can get enough healthy food, the WFP helps people feel stronger and healthier. They help kids learn better, grow taller, and stay healthy so they can have a brighter future! 😊
