Local Customs and Visitors

Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behavior. Others disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences.

What do you think about it?

It is believed that when tourists visit places in other countries adhere to local culture and customs should be practised by them. In this essay I will discuss it and will give my opinion.

A tourist is not liable to follow any local culture, they have the right to decide whether to practise it or not. However, in some countries due to this many problems have been experienced and countries like Hong Kong and India have complained about many foreigner’s misbehaviour, revealing dressing codes and intimacy in public.  Besides that, they make fun of it and make them feel inferior. For instance, I have seen several times that many of our foreign guests, especially youngsters, kiss each other in public areas or girls wear too short skirts. It might be perfectly fine in their home country but it was not appropriate as per the Indian culture.

On the other hand, some of us believe that people who are visiting our country should follow our cultures. It is understandable that following 100% is not possible for them, but they ought to accept at a certain level in order to have the same respect for locals’ culture. For example, one of my friends is western and she prefers quite modern clothing. However, whenever she goes to a mosque or temple in India, she always wears a proper outfit as per their standard just not to make others feel awkward or sad.

To conclude, I partly agree that tourists should be following our local culture and customs. However, they must follow to a certain degree to give equal respect to keep others happy.
