P2.9.5 Your Disaster Story

Objective: Think critically about emergency preparedness and response by crafting a fictional story that includes all key survival elements: planning, evacuation, helping others, and post-disaster actions.

Instructions:

  1. Scenario Setup:
    • Choose a disaster: fire, flood, earthquake, or landslide.
    • Imagine it happened to you and your family. Your home was destroyed or severely damaged.
  2. Story Requirements:
    • Start of the Story: Describe your life before the disaster.
      • How did you first hear about the potential danger?
      • What were the warning signs (if any)? Did you take them seriously?
    • Evacuation:
      • When did you realize you had to leave?
      • What did you take with you? (Include items from your emergency kit.)
      • How did you plan your escape route?
    • Helping Others:
      • Did you assist someone in need (e.g., family, neighbors)?
      • How did you work as a team to stay safe?
    • After the Disaster:
      • What happened when the disaster ended?
      • How did you find shelter, food, or water?
      • Reflect on how preparedness helped or what you wish you had done differently.
  3. Include These Features:
    • Evacuation Safety: Describe how you planned your route to avoid danger.
    • Emergency Kit: Mention key items you took and how they helped.
    • Communication: Explain how you stayed informed (e.g., radio, alerts).
    • Teamwork: Highlight how you helped others or worked together to stay safe.
  4. Length and Format:
    • Write 300–500 words.
    • Include a creative title (e.g., “The Night the River Took Everything”).
    • Use vivid descriptions and emotions to make the story engaging.
