But protons hate being crammed into a small place with their sisters. This is the point when the neutron steps onto stage to save the situation. They are pacifiers, they keep protons in one place, in the nucleus of an atom.

So thanks to the neutral neutrons, we have heavier atoms like carbon, oxygen, and many others.
