9.9.8 Famous Fires

Australian Bushfires (2019–2020)

Ravi and his family lived in a small town in New South Wales. The sky turned an eerie red as smoke choked the air. "It felt like the world was ending," Ravi recalled. His family had only minutes to evacuate as flames roared toward their home. They drove through walls of fire, leaving behind everything they owned.

The bushfires raged for months, burning 46 million acres, destroying thousands of homes, and killing over 1 billion animals. "When we came back, nothing was left. Not our house, not even the trees where my children played," said Ravi.

It took 240 days to fully extinguish the fires. Over 3,500 firefighters, including international crews, worked tirelessly, using planes to drop water and fire retardants while ground crews dug firebreaks.

Lesson: Climate change increases the intensity and duration of fires, affecting both natural and urban areas.
