9.2.5 SDG 2

What Can We Expect During a Food Shortage?

Higher prices: When there’s less food, the cost of food often goes up. People may have to pay more for things they used to buy for less money.

Limited choices: Stores may run out of certain foods or have fewer choices, so people might need to buy different foods than they’re used to.

Hunger: Sadly, some people might not get enough food at all, especially in areas that already struggle with food access. This can lead to malnutrition, meaning people don’t get the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay healthy.

  • If prices went up for all your favourite foods, what would you miss the most?
  • If your family had to spend more on food, what do you think you might buy less of?
  • Do you know of anyone who has had to cut back on what they buy? How does that make you feel?
  • What would you do if you went to the store and couldn’t find the foods you normally eat?
  • How would you feel if you went to bed hungry because there wasn’t enough food? How do you think it would affect your energy or mood?
  • If a friend couldn’t get enough to eat because of a food shortage. How would you help or support them?
  • What ideas do you have for helping people who don’t have enough food when there’s a shortage?”
  • How do you think communities can work together to make sure everyone has food, even during a shortage?
  • Have you ever felt worried about not having enough food? How did you handle it?
