Why Do Some People Go Hungry? Let’s Find Out! 🌍🍽️

Sometimes, it’s not just about not having enough food in the world—it's about how different things can make it hard for people to get food. Let’s see a few reasons why some people face hunger and how it happens:

1. Conflicts and Wars ⚔️

When countries or groups of people fight, it makes getting food much harder. Imagine if your favorite grocery store couldn’t open because of a fight. That’s what happens during wars! People can’t work or earn money, and food becomes more expensive. Sometimes, people fighting even stop food from reaching people who really need it, like using food as a weapon.

That's what’s happening in places like Sudan. Since the start of the war in 2023, almost 25 million people have faced a serious food crisis. Many can’t get food because farms are destroyed, food delivery trucks can’t get through, and even helping organizations are blocked. It’s a little like if someone took all the food away when people needed it most—only, it’s happening to millions of people.

  • Are there any protests or conflicts happening in your area or happened in the past?
  • Imagine a war breaks out and all the shops close in your town. How would that make you feel? Where would your family get food?
  • Have you ever seen people struggling to get food in the news because of war?

2. Money Problems, Inflation  💸

Sometimes, economic events like  inflation makes it harder for families to buy food. Imagine that every day, your dad makes a little more money, which sounds great, right? But at the same time, food also cost more and more. If prices go up faster than the extra money he’s making, it’s like you’re actually able to buy less than before.

What happened in Pakistan during Covid-19 was different. Pakistan’s “piggy bank” of money gets filled up when people working in other countries send money back home. These workers help their families buy food. But during COVID-19, many of these workers lost their jobs, which meant less money came home to Pakistan. It was like a huge allowance cut for the whole country! With less money, prices went up, and many families struggled to afford enough food.

  • Do you think food is more expensive in your market than it was last year?
  • Have you noticed your family spending more money on the same things they used to buy?
  • What’s the price of your favorite candy or snack now? Do you remember how much it cost before?
  • Do you know if your family is making more money or less than before?

3. Bad Weather 🌪️☀️

Imagine if the weather didn’t behave the way it’s supposed to. Sometimes, it doesn’t rain when it should, or it rains too much, like in floods. These weather problems can destroy crops, like vegetables and grains, and hurt animals that give us milk, eggs, or meat. Without enough crops or animals, there’s less food to go around. Plus, if roads get destroyed, it becomes harder to move food where it’s needed.

  • Have you ever seen the weather do something unexpected, like rain a lot or not rain at all?
  • Do you think too much rain or too little rain would make it harder to grow fruits and vegetables? Why?
  • Imagine a big flood destroyed the roads near your home. How would that make it harder for you to get the food you need?
  • If you were in charge, what would you do to help people when there isn’t enough food because of bad weather?
