7.3.1 An Introduction to Skills

In schools, the focus is on English, Maths and Science. Are they the only things that are important? Why not music, arts or moral studies? Simple: schools focus on knowledge, not on skills. Exams measure knowledge, not skills. However, when it comes to success, life measures only skills.

You are fluent in English. You can talk for 45 minutes without taking a breath. Are you able to solve problems with it? Have you found your problems to solve?

We have a lot to do in this world: to eliminate poverty, bigotry, prejudice, racism and misogyny. To stop climate change and pollution, to promote sustainability for a longer and healthier life.

Oh, you mean you have a different problem to solve: how to make a lot of money, how to be rich. Well, all the self-made men have had excellents skills. They might not be so knowledgeable, but they are definitely able to acquire knowledge when they need it. They understand that knowledge is not more than transferring information through rote memorisation, and skills start when theory is put into practice.
