6.7.5 Lost on an Island

Day 8: Meeting the Tribes
When we ventured inland, we found something unexpected, people! Three distinct groups live on this island, each in a separate region.

The first tribe lives along the river and seems friendly. Their population is quite dense, with many small huts close together. The second tribe lives in the highlands. Their settlement is more spread out, with just a few homes on the hills. The third tribe, near the forest, didn’t approach us at all. They live deep in the woods, with small clearings dotted here and there.

To avoid conflict and better understand the island’s population, we decided to draw a political map with population density. We marked the territories of each tribe using different colors, and we shaded areas darker where their populations are more concentrated. This helps us know where we’re likely to encounter people and where it might be best to stay away.

Understanding the population density is just as important as knowing the boundaries. It shows us not only where people live, but how they use the land. Tomorrow, we will try to find out if these tribes share resources or compete for them.
