6.2 The Air: Breath of Life
backLeo’s Adventure in Space:
Living Without Air on the Moon and Mars
In 2224, Leo is going on an unforgettable journey to space with his father! His dad works on Mars, but first, they’ll stop by the Moon Station for a couple of days, then head to the Mars Colony. Leo’s excited, but he knows that life on the Moon and Mars is completely different from Earth—especially when it comes to breathing.
Leo steps off the spaceship onto the Moon, but he can’t just walk outside. There’s no air on the Moon! Instead, he has to wear a space suit with an oxygen cylinder strapped to his back. The suit’s oxygen tank gives him fresh air to breathe, just like a fish needs a tank of water to survive on land. Leo learns that without his suit, he couldn’t last even a few minutes here. People can’t go out freely, and even when they do, they don’t stay outside long because it’s too risky and exhausting. Inside the dome, people live and work, growing plants, recycling water, and creating everything they need in this bubble of artificial Earth.
The second day, Leo ignoring the strict warnings, decides to explore beyond the dome boundaries. As Leo jumps across the dusty lunar surface, he feels invincible. But he gets too excited and stops thinking clearly. He takes a leap off a small rock, but his landing goes wrong—he lands hard, and his spacesuit scrapes against a sharp, hidden edge of the rock.
Alarms goes off in his helmet. “WARNING: Oxygen pressure dropping!” His heart races as he realises the suit has been punctured. Air is escaping fast, and he remembers the survival drill from training. He seals the tear using a quick-patch kit from his emergency pack and activates the oxygen reserve.
But there’s still a problem—the patched suit won’t hold for long, and he’s far from the dome. His dad spots the issue from inside and shouts instructions through the helmet radio. “Leo, don’t run! Move slowly to conserve oxygen!” Leo slowly moves back to safety, feeling like time is crawling.
When Leo finally steps back inside, his knees give in, and he collapses into his dad’s arms. His dad is furious but relieved. “I told you, Leo, the Moon isn’t a playground!”
Leo realises the seriousness of the situation. From that moment, he promises to be more careful.
