5.3.8 Building a Shelter

Fire – California, USA

Climate: Hot and dry, prone to wildfires.

Carlos’s house turned to ashes during a devastating wildfire that swept through their neighbourhood. With no time to prepare, Carlos and his family looked for refuge at an emergency camp. Volunteers helped them set up a temporary shelter using a donated tent. They insulated it with blankets and plastic sheets to keep out the night cold. While temporary, the shelter provided stability as they navigated insurance claims and the long process of rebuilding.

  • Time to Build: 1–2 days (tents provided in emergency camps are pre-made).
  • Cost: Medium ($$) – Tents are more expensive than basic materials but are often supplied by relief organizations.
  • Local Materials: No – Tents are manufactured elsewhere.

  • How would you decide where to build a shelter in an emergency?
(Would you prioritize safety from weather, wild animals, or access to water?)
  • Have you ever built a shelter, like a tent? What did you learn from the experience?
(Did it work well? What could you improve?)
