4.6.10 Adverbs Ending with -ly
Adverbs are words in sentences that give information about how things happen. The sentences are fine without them, we understand them, but with the adverb we know more.
The car was close to me. | The car was dangerously close to me (it nearly hit me). |
Many of them end with -ly, and we can make our adverbs from adjectives:
Adjectives | Adverbs |
sudden | suddenly |
near | nearly |
heavy | heavily |
accident | accident-al-ly |
serious | seriously |
dangerous | dangerously |
polite | politely |
wonderful | wonderfully |
rare | rarely |
exact | exactly |
unhealthy | unhealthily |
bitter | bitterly |
simple | simply |
lucky | luckily |
quick | quickly |
narrow | narrowly |
ugly | Hehe, no, there is no word such as ugly-ly. |
