4.10.15 Turtle Rescue in Juara

A holiday on Juara

I went to Juara with my family for a holiday. Juara is a small but beautiful island. On the second day of our holiday, we walked around to see what was on the small island. We were walking in the sand along the sea when we saw a sign that read, “Welcome to Juara Turtle Project.” We wanted to see turtles, so we went in. There was nobody there, but we still found some interesting things.

Life Cycle

The mother turtle places her eggs deep in the sand. The warmth of the sand takes care of the eggs. After two months, the baby turtles come out of the eggs and try to find the sea as fast as possible. They are running for their lives. Birds, dogs, and other animals want to eat them, so they have to be very fast.

When they reach the ocean, they swim for days. They find food, small animals along the way, but this food isn’t important because they have backup energy for up to two weeks from the egg. They face many dangers, not only from animals, big fish, and birds that want to eat them, but also from people’s trash like cigarette butts, plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other stuff that looks like food to the turtles and will kill them if they eat it.

Sadly, the oceans are covered in our rubbish, and many turtles are killed by eating trash.

Did you know I live in an ocean filled with 100 million tons of plastic? And the number is rising! We are what we eat; I am a plastic sea turtle, can you help me?

After swimming for days, the little turtles find their home, islands of sea grass, and plants to hide themselves in the ocean. They eat sea grass, but also find insects and snails until they grow big. By this time, most of them are dead, killed by other animals or human rubbish. Only one turtle survives out of a thousand.
