3.5.12 Too many Mosquitoes

Five years ago my father bought a beautiful garden outside the city, with a small pond. We went there every weekend. We loved to spend time there, working and talking. There were flowers, fruit trees, every kind of plant. The pond was small, but lovely. Dragonflies danced over the water, eating mosquitoes and making the garden clean.

But after months, there were more and more mosquitoes biting and eating us. Being in the garden was not great anymore. My face and arms were full of red dots, all mosquito bites. We could not take off our clothes, because of the mosquitoes, they were everywhere. We also noticed that there were no dragonflies over the pond anymore. We wanted to know where the mosquitoes came from and where the dragonflies went.

My father went around the gardens to find out. He noticed a chicken farm near to the gardens. It opened when the mosquitoes started to show up. He watched the chicken farm. He found out that the chicken farm brought many flies. To get rid of the flies, the farm used chemicals. Sadly, they also killed our dragonflies. Chemicals don’t know the difference between flies and dragonflies. Without the dragonflies, mosquitoes began to have big families. Mosquitoes put their eggs on the water. One mosquito makes around one hundred eggs every third day. Dragonflies eat the eggs of the mosquitoes. If we don’t have dragonflies, the mosquitoes eat us, people.

My father wanted to get his beautiful garden back. He talked to people in the other gardens and together they asked for the chicken farm to be closed. After a lot of work, the farm finally closed down.

Without the farm, the chemicals went away, and the dragonflies came back. They started eating the mosquitoes again, and the garden became a nice place again. The people were happy, and the garden was beautiful again.
