A Learner’s Age is Only a Number

I was about 6 years old, bursting with questions like what stars are, how the earth came into existence, but mainly, what are the beginning and end of time and space. I didn't really get answers. In fact I was ignored. Once my mum was chatting with her sisters in the sitting room and they started to whisper. They didn't want me to hear them, eventually I had to leave the room. I had a nagging feeling about their topic. It must be about the universe, the great secrets, I thought. Later I learned their great secret was about the next door girl's pregnancy. They were guessing who was the father of the baby. At that time I had zero interest in that topic, to be honest.

It came to mind the other day when my niece asked me how to answer questions about evolution. It depends on the question, I answered. Is it about 'what', or 'how' or maybe 'why'? She said her daughter's question in fact was that how did monkeys turn into humans. Oh my, are you serious? Your 4-year old daughter asks questions like that? I was taken aback.  I didn't have a good answer, as monkeys don't turn into humans, they never did (though there are humans who occassionally turn into monkeys). Anyway this story is a bit far more complex. But the little girl definitely enjoyed the Natural History Museum in London, and temporarily it helped to satisfy her curiosity.

Questions come, when you encounter some intriguing situation. You should not store them for later answers. That's why we think curricula are not the answer to entertain your curiosity. Why should we learn about atoms at the age of 13? About heredity at the age of 17?  Age doesn't matter. Learn when you are curious and have motivation. So we don't classify our content by age groups but by complexity. You can explain anything at any level. When you use or create a unit, you see the content type which can be Basic, Half-way, Advanced, and we have two extra categories for Fun and Venture. Basic level means that anyone can understand without prior knowledge, regardless of age. Half-way is the intermediate level, you might get the gist of it without difficulty. The advanced level requires prior knowledge, the best practice is to give a link to them. Use the Fun type when the emphasys is more on entertainment than giving information. Venture is self-explanatory, it should be a challenging topic that makes you think hard.

So just watch the labels when you build up your learning pathway as a learner, and label your content correctly as a master.
