P2.8.3 The Big Waste

The Big Picture

Every year, humans create more than 2 billion tons of waste, thatโ€™s how much waste we make in just one year! The problem is growing, and here are some of the biggest challenges:

Landfills:

  • Most trash goes to landfills ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ, but landfills take up a lot of space ๐Ÿž๏ธ and release harmful gases like methane ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, which causes climate change ๐ŸŒ.
  • Some landfills leak into the soil and water ๐Ÿ’ง, harming plants ๐ŸŒฑ, animals ๐Ÿพ, and even humans ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ.

Ocean Plastics:

  • Every year, 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean ๐ŸŒŠ. Thatโ€™s like dumping one garbage truck ๐Ÿš› full of plastic into the water every minute!
  • Plastic harms sea animals ๐Ÿข๐ŸŸ, who often mistake it for food ๐Ÿด.

E-Waste (Electronic Waste):

  • Old phones ๐Ÿ“ฑ, computers ๐Ÿ’ป, and TVs ๐Ÿ“บ are often thrown away instead of recycled โ™ป๏ธ.
  • E-waste contains harmful chemicals โ˜ ๏ธ that can leak into the soil and water ๐ŸŒพ, causing pollution.

Food Waste:

  • About one-third of all food produced is wasted ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿž. Thatโ€™s enough food to feed 2 billion people every year!
  • Wasted food rots in landfills ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ and releases methane ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, contributing to climate change ๐ŸŒ.
Imagine all the waste we create every year is a big pie ๐Ÿ•. Each slice of the pie shows what happens to that waste:

  1. Landfills (37%):
    • This is the biggest slice of the pie. Most trash ends up in landfills, where itโ€™s buried.
    • Problem: Landfills take up space and release harmful gases like methane, which causes climate change ๐ŸŒ.
  2. Recycled/Composted (33%):
    • This slice shows waste thatโ€™s recycled (like bottles and paper) or composted (like food scraps).
    • Good news: Recycling and composting help reduce waste and protect the environment! โ™ป๏ธ
  3. Open Dumps (22%):
    • This slice is trash thrown in places without proper managementโ€”like open fields or rivers.
    • Problem: Open dumps pollute soil, water, and air, harming animals, plants, and people ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ง.
  4. Incinerated (8%):
    • This tiny slice is waste thatโ€™s burned in incinerators to create energy.
    • Problem: It reduces waste but releases air pollution and greenhouse gases ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ.
