P1.2.1 Bottled Water

Where do you go when you are thirsty? To the supermarket to buy a bottle of water? Or you already have one at home? Maybe you just go to the tap and get a glass of water?

Is bottled water better than tap water? People who tried both with closed eyes say, the tap water is tastier.

Is it cleaner? Sometimes yes, sometimes not, because, in fact, most of the bottled water comes from… taps. Is it cheaper? No, in fact bottled water costs 2000 times more than tap water. We pay for not only the water but for the bottle, too.

Then who buys them? Well, people in the US buy over 100 million bottles a day. It is crazy. Why do people buy water in bottles? What will be next? Air in bottles? Possible.

It all started when companies got worried about their bottled drinks. Many people realised that cola and other drinks were not healthy at all. They have too much sugar in it, and other chemicals. So many people started to drink tap water instead of cola. The companies came up with the idea of selling … tap water. They just wanted to make money. First everybody laughed at them. Who would buy water in bottles? Water is free! But the companies were smarter. They said their water is healthier than the tap water, and it comes from nature. They lied, but people bought their lies… and bottled water.

However they don’t lie about one thing: it is possible that the tap water is not as clean as their filtered bottled water. Factories, yes, the bottle factories, too, throw dirty water into rivers from where water comes to taps. How is it? They make our tap water dirty so that they can sell us clean water in bottles???

Let’s see the end of the story. What happens to the plastic bottles when people drink the water and the bottles end up in bins? You won’t believe it. It goes all the way from the US to… India.
