4.6.10 Adverbs Ending with -ly
Adverbs are words in sentences that give information about how things happen. The sentences are fine without them, we understand them, but with the adverb we know more.
| The car was close to me. | The car was dangerously close to me (it nearly hit me). |
Many of them end with -ly, and we can make our adverbs from adjectives:
| Adjectives | Adverbs |
| sudden | suddenly |
| near | nearly |
| heavy | heavily |
| accident | accident-al-ly |
| serious | seriously |
| dangerous | dangerously |
| polite | politely |
| wonderful | wonderfully |
| rare | rarely |
| exact | exactly |
| unhealthy | unhealthily |
| bitter | bitterly |
| simple | simply |
| lucky | luckily |
| quick | quickly |
| narrow | narrowly |
| ugly | Hehe, no, there is no word such as ugly-ly. |
